Recreation near 6166 Red Ridge Trail

Right outside the front door of 6166 Red Ridge Trail, is Lory State Park and Horsetooth Mountain Park (also known as Horsetooth Mountain Open Space), both parks offering outdoor recreation opportunities that rival that of any wilderness area along the Front Range. This home is only 1.5 miles from some of the most scenic and pristine areas in the Front Range! And with only minutes to Fort Collins, you can’t ask for a better location!

We’ll begin with Lory State Park, south of 6166 Red Ridge Trail

Lory State Park contains 20 miles of trails designed for every level of hiker and mountain biker. Click HERE for a list of the trails and description of each. View the TRAIL MAP and you’re on your way!

Don’t forget to register those boats, OVHs, and snowmobiles. Each link will allow you to fill out and print a registration form to send in.

Fees to enter Lory State Park: A daily pass is $6 per vehicle, or $3 per person entering the park on foot, bike, or horse. The $3 also includes Horsetooth Mountain Open Space if entering without a vehicle. Camping is $10 per night, plus $6 for a vehicle or $3 without. Group Picnic Area fees vary. To reserve a picnic area, call 970-493-1623.

To the south of Lory State Park is Horsetooth Mountain Park

Horsetooth Mountain Open Space is adjacent to Lory State Park consisting of 2,711 acres west of Horsetooth Reservoir and 29 miles of trails. Most trails are dog, horse, and bike-friendly as well. Click HERE for a list of trails, their mileage and difficulty level.  This MAP will  help you decide which trail to tackle first! Horsetooth Rock is probably one of the most well known landmarks of the park, if not Fort Collins.

The hike to the top of the rock is about 3.2 miles on a well-maintained and traveled dirt trail where both dogs and bikes are welcome. It’s a moderate hike that even the novice hiker will be able to partake in. Once you  reach the top, you won’t find better, more beautiful views of Fort Collins and the Front Range.

Behind Horsetooth Rock, are gorgeous views of Roosevelt National Forest. The elevation at the top is 7,255, nearly 2,000 feet above the reservoir.

Horsetooth Falls is also a popular destination that is a must-see. It is considered an easy, 2.25 mile hike. Parking is available at two locations: the Horsetooth Mountain Open Space trailhead parking area, immediately off CR 38 E approximately 5 – 6 miles west of the intersection of Harmony and Taft Hill in Fort Collins, and the Soderberg Open Space trailhead parking area, accessed by following signs to Inlet Bay off of Shoreline Drive. A park permit of $6 a vehicle is required and there are pay stations located in the parking areas.

Obviously one of the biggest draws is Horsetooth Reservoir. Open year round, this 1,900 acre, 6.5 mile body of water is a favorite for boating, fishing, water skiing, and camping.  Got kayaks? Meander around and discover hidden coves–a perfect evening getaway to watch the sun set and only minutes from 6166 Red Ridge Trail.
